After meeting your friendly guide at a designated location in downtown Merida, hop on a public bus to the Mayan village of Tixcocob. This 45-minute bus ride is part of your authentic Yucatan adventure, as you and your small group take part in the life and culture of the local people.

Upon arrival in Tixcocob, visit the central church and the market, where artisans display their colorful hammocks. Take in the lively atmosphere as vendors sell fresh vegetables and fruit, tortillas and meat.

From here, travel through remote Mayan towns and sleepy villages on a 6.8-mile (11-km) bicycle ride to the Ake Mayan ruins. Follow your guide around the archeological site to see interesting features such as the large columns and huge steps that differentiate Ake from other Mayan sites. Learn about the sacbehs (white roads) that the ancient Maya used for traveling from one site to another on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Afterward, bike to the 19th-century Sisal Hacienda, owned by the Solis family, which still produces the sisal fibers used to make rope and twine. Watch workers as they carry henequen leaves harvested from a type of agave cactus into the machine room and drying area of the colonial hacienda.

Continue learning about the customs and cultural heritage of the Mayan people as you ride your bike back to Tixcocob for lunch with a local family. Youll sample traditional Yucatecan specialties made by your host before your guide accompanies your small group back to Merida by bus.
