Morning Tour: El Escorial Monastery and Valley of the Fallen
Departing
from the central Plaza de España, your day begins with a visit to the
16th-century El Escorial Monastery, built by King Philip II to house the
remains of his parents, Charles I and Isabella of Portugal. Here,
you’ll take a guided tour of the palatial complex, including the
basilica, the monastery’s collection of European art and the Pantheon of
Kings.

Next, drive six miles (9.5 km) to the poignant Valley of
the Fallen and its top-crossed basilica, erected by dictator General
Franco as a monument to the dead of the Spanish Civil War. Your visit
includes a guided tour of the basilica, as well as time to enjoy the
expansive valley views.

Evening Tour: Madrid Illuminations
Returning
to Madrid, you’ll have the afternoon free to explore and have lunch
(own expense) before boarding a comfortable air-conditioned coach for
your illuminations evening tour of the city. Your local guide will point
out Madrid’s brilliantly lit landmarks, grand avenues and squares,
including the floodlit statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in Plaza
de España and the ancient Egyptian Templo de Debod.

Then take a
guided walk to Madrid’s central focal point, Plaza Mayor. Formerly the
site of bullfights and royal festivities, today the square is lined by
shops and outdoor cafes. You’ll have free time here to enjoy dinner or a
drink (own expense) before the flamenco show begins.

Flamenco Show

Your
evening’s cultural highlight is the emotionally charged drama of
flamenco music, song and dance. Featuring an internationally renowned
flamenco troupe of more than 20 performers, the show will be held at the legendary Torres
Bermejas flamenco club. While enjoying the rhythm of flamenco, enjoy a
complimentary drink.
