Experience the life of a local Shanghainese as you take to the streets of Old Shanghai. This walking tour combines residential districts, historical buildings and traditional Shanghai eats for a comprehensive overview of Old Shanghai's way of life. Join the locals in traditional pastimes like tai chi, visit the residence of a prominent Chinese poet and enjoy a film about Shanghai cinema’s golden age in a quaint café celebrating 1930s Shanghai.

Live the life of a Shanghai resident on this four-hour, small-group, cultural walking tour. Meet your guide and travel like the locals do on the metro system, which takes you straight to the hub of Old Shanghai. Begin your tour of Old Shanghai by joining in or simply watching the daily festivities happening in Lu Xun Park, from flag waving to ballroom dancing, and even tai chi.

Your group, consisting of no more than 12 people, will then explore one of the city’s nongtang, an old residential alleyway unique to Shanghai. The style of the local houses combines Chinese and Western design, and the alleyway reflects a residential culture that is distinctively Old Shanghai, with harmonious neighborly relationships shared among its residents. Step inside an old building and into a former residence of Lu Xun, one of China’s most influential writers of the 20th century.

Next, browse souvenirs at a typical street market and enter a little antique shop that offers a variety of trinkets such as old advertising signs and telephones. Nibble on some tasty xiaolong bao (soup dumplings) as you make a quick stop at a café. Enjoy the architecture of the old city, from restored mansions dating back to the early 1900s to Hongde Tang Church, an active Christian church built in the style of an old Chinese temple.

Finish your tour at the Old Film Café on Duolun Road, one of Old Shanghai’s premier cultural spots, where you will watch a screening of a black-and-white film showcasing the golden age of Chinese cinema. After the film, your tour ends, but feel free to enjoy the company of your newfound friends over coffee, tea or other snacks offered by the café (own expense).
